Manchester City are on course to secure the high-profile signing of Leanardo Bonucci for a fee in the region of €60 million, according to reports in England.
With ongoing concerns over the fitness of captain Vincent Kompany, new City boss Pep Guardiola has targeted the acquisition of a top quality centre-back this summer.
Everton’s John Stones and Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte have also been mentioned as possible targets, but the Daily Mirror claims that City have stolen a march on Chelsea in the race to sign the Juventus stopper.
After shining for club and country last season, Bonucci was also a prime target for former Azzurri head coach Antonio Conte, who has taken over the reins at Stamford Bridge.
However, the Citizens have stepped up transfer negotiations with the Bianconeri over the last few days, and are prepared to meet the Serie A champions’ valuation for the elegant defender.
Bonucci, who is currently on holiday, is apparently open to a move to Manchester, with a weekly wage of around €167,000 being proposed by the Premier League side.
Since joining Juve from Bari in 2010, the Italian international has established himself as one of the continent’s biggest defensive talents, forming a formidable partnership with Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli during his 274 games for the Old Lady.
