With tensions still running high as a result of Gonzalo Higuain’s lucrative move from Napoli to Juventus, the Argentine striker has almost inevitably become the subject of a torrent of abuse on social media.

Higuain, who had previously been conspicuous in his absence from the likes of Instagram and Facebook following completion of the €90 million deal, has already received widespread criticism from Partenopei fans over his decision to leave for a rival club, but new evidence has emerged that this has also spread onto the internet.

Riled by what they deemed to be a betrayal from Higuain, Napoli fans have targeted the prolific forward on Instagram after he posted an image of himself on Wednesday in his Juve training kit together with new teammates Paulo Dybala and Roberto Pereyra with the caption: “Starting the day with a nice drink. Have a good day everyone.”

Given that it was his first post since the deal’s completion, and that it contained no message of thanks to Napoli supporters, a fierce backlash occurred almost instantly after the photo appeared on his page.

Within three hours of its publication, almost 4000 comments had been submitted- most of which were from angry Partenopei fans.

Although the photo also currently has an impressive 55,000 likes, the responses serve as an indication as to the clear fury of some parts of the Stadio San Paolo fanbase, and suggest that the 28-year-old could well be in for a very difficult time when he returns to Naples as a Juve player next April.
