As they look to strengthen their defence as quickly as possible, Napoli have placed an offer of a three-year deal on the table for ex-Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres.
The Uruguayan has been a free agent since leaving the Italian champions at the end of last season, upon the expiration of his contract in Turin.
There has been no shortage of interest from Serie A sides looking to keep him in Italy with Fiorentina, Roma, AC Milan and Udinese all linked with moves for the ex-Barcelona stopper.
However, the Partenopei look to be the frontrunners in the race to secure Caceres’ signature and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has already offered the player a three-year contract worth €2 million per season.Napoli’s interest in the 29-year-old increased two-fold over the past weekend. Firstly, the Campania club have ended their interest in trying to pull off a potentially difficult move for Torino’s Nikola Maksimovic, who is also wanted by both West Ham and Chelsea.
On top of that, the club’s hierarchy were unimpressed with the central defensive showing of Kalidou Koulibaly and Raul Albiol during Napoli’s 2-2 draw with Pescara on Sunday, particularly in the first half, and are keen to add more options in that area as soon as possible.
