Coming off the back of a record-breaking goal-scoring season at Napoli, current Serie Acapocannoniere Gonzalo Higuain endeared himself to the Partenopei faithful but it seems the honeymoon could be heading for a bitter ending. The Argentinian striker’s brother and agent Nicolas Higuain, announced recently that Gonzalo would not be renewing with the Serie A runners up and had some harsh words for the De Laurentiis’ club.
In a recent interview with Radio CRC, Nicolas Higuain spoke out about Napoli’s competitiveness and believes the club was not able to live up to their promises:
There was talks of a project for the Champions League and a convincing project to fight for the Scudetto but we are aware that we are far away from it. This year, we finished the first half of the season in first place but the club’s effort was void because we did not see the club make important purchases to fight for the Scudetto. The President has the right to request the release clause for Gonzalo but we have the right to disagree with the project and not renew the contract, it is only right.
Perhaps the club is looking into the purchase of young players but we believe they should make an effort to bring in players that can compete with Juventus, who have won the Scudetto for five consecutive years. It seems to me that the direction of the club, while respectable, is not the right one to go to war with Juventus. You cannot do that and you cannot make the Champions League with young players.
